The Girls Band Cry anime started airing in Japanese television from April 6th, 2024 at 00:30 JST on Saturdays. It was animated by the studio Toei Animation, known for their work on big franchises like Dragon Ball and One Piece.

So far, only one season has been announced, with 13 episodes throughout the seven-volume Blu-ray releases of the season. Each episode runs for 23 minutes, along with Opening and Ending themes performed by TOGENASHI TOGEARI, who also perform various insert songs throughout the series.

The anime was broadcast on TOKYO MX television channel in Japan, and was available to watch online on streaming service Amazon Prime Video. The main writer of the anime is Jukki Hanada, the series director is Kazuo Sakai, and the CG director is Jaehoon Jung. Music in this series is composed by Kenji Tamai, and characters designed by Nari Teshima.

Official Plot Synopsis[]

The main character drops out of high school in her second year, and aims at entering a university while working alone in Tokyo. A girl is betrayed by her friends and doesn't know what to do. Another girl is abandoned by her parents, and tries to survive in the city by doing part-time jobs. This world lets us down all the time. Nothing goes as planned. But we want something that we can continue to like. We believe there's a place where we belong. That's why we sing.

高校2年、学校を中退して単身東京で大学を目指すことになった主人公。仲間に裏切られてどうしていいか分からない少女。両親に捨てられて、大都会で一人バイトで食いつないでいる女の子。

この世界はいつも私たちを裏切るけど。何一つ思い通りにいかないけど。でも、私たちは何かを好きでいたいから。

自分の居場所がどこかにあると信じているから。だから、歌う。

1. 東京ワッショイ (Long Live Tokyo) April 6th, 2024 In March, 17-year-old Nina dropped out of high school and started living alone in Tokyo. She lives in a big city where she doesn't know right from left. She came here because she heard a song on the internet that inspired her. At that time, Nina meets a street musician who plays the song.

2. 夜行性の生き物3匹 (Three Nocturnal Creatures) April 13th, 2024 Nina has started attending cram school. Taking the university entrance exam is a promise she has made to her parents. However, she is not used to the cram school life, and she is having a hard time concentrating on her studies. Just then, Nina receives a call from Momoka. And, upon visiting Momoka, Nina is introduced to a girl who is about the same age as her.

3. ズッコケ問答 (Unorthodox Q&A) April 20th, 2024 Nina goes to cram school for a few weeks, but can't concentrate on her studies; instead, she obsesses about the band. Momoka convinces her to sing at a local mall.
4. 感謝 (驚) (Surprise (Gratitude)) April 27th, 2024 Subaru's grandmother suddenly comes to Tokyo. Subaru promises that she'll tell her grandma, "I don't want to be an actress. I want to play music in a band." However, when they meet her, liked a leashed cat, she puts on a smile, and plays the role of a lady.
5. 歌声よおこれ (This Singing Voice) May 4th, 2024 The girls receive an offer to perform live at a place Momoka used to frequent. It will be their first time participating in a live performance as a true band. While Nina is struggling to meet her ticket quota, she receives a convert ticket for a Diamond Dust concert.
6. はぐれ者賛歌 (Outcast Hymn) May 11th, 2024 The girls keep practicing to improve as a band. Nina, who wants to win against Diamond Dust at all costs, tries to find a way to increase their following, but she can't seem to figure out how. Tomo and Rupa, who saw the trio's concert the other day, reach out to Nina.
7. 名前をつけてやる (I'll Give You a Name) May 18th, 2024 With the new addition of Rupa and Tomo, Nina and the others have started to work as a five-member band. Momoka proposed the idea of another live performance, but due to each of the five's individuality, it doesn't seem like it will be easy to get them work well together. Nina and Momoka's feelings towards the band are at odds with each other, so the car ride continues with a bit of awkwardness.
8. もしも君が泣くならば (If You Cry) May 25th, 2024 Nina and Momoka, who were already at odds with each other, get more heated after the live performance, and the two share their harsh feelings with each other. Nina decided to quit school in order to seriously aim for a professional band career. Tomo says that she will will quit if Momoka and Nina can't get along. Momoka ends up visiting Nina's new part-time job.
9. 欠けた月が出ていた (A Crescent Moon Has Come Out) June 1, 2024 Because of her past, Tomo is afraid of being forward with her feelings, and has trouble expressing herself towards her bandmates. She seeks out Nina's advice, who has been practicing the guitar. Tomo may have said some hurtful words but, seeing how Nina never gives up, her heart slowly starts to change
10. ワンダーフォーゲル (Wandervogel) June 8, 2024 While Nina continued her activities playing in the band, her parents from the countryside paid a surprise visit. She kept running away, but after some pushing from her bandmates, she reluctantly goes back to her parents' home. As usual, her efforts to get her father to understand her bear no fruit. The next day, her father takes her to a certain place-- the high school she used to attend.
11. 世界のまん中 (The Center of the World) June 15, 2024 Nina and the band continue to practice for the music festival as the band slowly comes into chorus. Witnessing the vast audience and the large stage motivates the band. Subaru steels her resolve on what she wants to do.
12. 空がまた暗くなる (The Sky Darkens Once More) June 22, 2024 After successfully leaving a mark in the outdoor music festival, Nina and the others formally signed a contract with an agency. Quitting their part-time jobs, the five start their journey of making music as professionals. How will they survive on this path as their various hearts intersect on this matter?
13. ロックンロールは鳴り止まないっ (Rock 'N' Roll Wont Stop Ringing) June 29, 2024 TogeToge's ticket sales for their band battle against Diamond Dust were less than half of what they hoped. Meanwhile, the tickets for Diamond Dust were sold out. Reality is cold and uncaring. Even so, Nina and the band will preserve through their indomitable spirit.
